5 out of 5 stars This stuff works.   November 21, 2005

Woke up a couple weeks back with what I thought was just the beginning of a bad cold; you know the symptoms - stuffy nose/sinuses full of 'gunk' and a persistant cough... didnt actually feel 'sick', but knew something was 'brewing'. I've seen the commercials for Mucinex that have been running lately, so, before I went to work that morning I stopped & picked a box up. I took 2 every 12 hours for about a week, and, I have to admit, this stuff really does work; My cough eased up A LOT, especially at night when it seemed to be at its worst, and, all of the 'gunk' in my sinuses really 'thinned out'. Needless to say, though, I did end up going to the doctor since the symptoms were still there. (hey, I'm a typical guy, and its true- we never like to admit we're sick - even though we are.) After listening to my chest & checking me out, he told me that I had Bronchitis, BUT, that taking the Mucinex daily had kept it from being/getting MUCH worse - he also told me to KEEP taking it until I was better - which I have. ( * A Note - I had Bronchitis about 4 years ago & it was GOD AWFUL - that's why I'm convinced that the Mucinex does work; I never once felt really 'bad/awful' this time & like I said, and my doctor confirmed, it was probably from taking this stuff on a regular/continual basis - NEEDLESS TO SAY, THOUGH!, If your symptoms DONT go away, GO AND SEE A DOCTOR!

5 out of 5 stars Great for your cough and congestion (throat AND sinuses)   October 26, 2009

I'm not one for taking meds/pills at the slightest sign of a cold. In fact, I usually try to tough it out. However, last year, I had a bad cold that just would not quit. The worst part was my cough and the congestion I felt both in my throat and in my sinuses and nose. Just about all other symptoms went away except for this. So, I decided I'd give this a try. The results were outstanding.

I know that other reviewers state that combining both an expectorant and cough suppressant doesn't make sense, but I beg to differ. These symptoms often appear at the same time and Mucinex DM quickly thins out the mucous regardless of whether its in your throat or in your nose. It makes it easier to cough up the nasty stuff, you just won't have the urge to cough over and over and over again. It works very fast and the whole time-release thing is a definite plus. I've only ever taken one pill at a time (see the beginning of my review), but I assume if things were really bad you could follow the directions on the label and try taking two every twelve hours. In any case, this stuff works for me. I highly recommend it! Just make sure you stay hydrated. It makes everything work better (the meds and your body).

5 out of 5 stars Very strong compared to cough syrup   October 28, 2009

My wife suggested Mucinex after I developed a post-flu cough that kept me up at night. This stuff allowed me to sleep. Then I ran out of it and went to the store to get some more, but it is expensive, so I bought some cough syrup instead with the same active ingredients--dextromethorphan and guaifenesin. Well, I just compared the potency of the Mucinex with the cough syrup. 12-hour Mucinex has 60mg dextromethorphan and 1200 mg guaifenesin per tablet; the 4-hour cough syrup only has 10mg dextromethorphan and 100 mg guaifenesin per 2 tsp dose. In other words, the Mucinex has six times the dextromethorphan and 12 times the guaifenesin as the cough syrup. Even adjusting for the time difference (12 hours for Mucinex and 4 hours for the cough syrup), the Mucinex is much more powerful. No wonder it works. I don't know how they get away with packing such a punch in the Mucinex.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Amazing   May 20, 2007

I am an old iron lung survivor that has lived many years outside that metal pita pocket, thankfully. However, recently, four years ago, symptoms returned and it was discovered that I have fairly non-functional diagphragms that appeared to be getting weaker. Well, having two health insurances, with Cigna as the primary, I was prescribed for trial a device called The Vest made by Hill-Rom. A truely amazing device that pummeled your chest with pneumatic pulses through a vest system and that loosened the phlegm in your chest and increased the quality of air exchange.
After a 3 month trial I called Cigna and they said to go ahead and get it and this information was passed on to Hill Rom. After being billed for it, Cigna changed their minds and left the cost in my hands. Needless to say I could not afford a device that costs, well, lots. So, Hill Rom was kind enough to take it back and I was left with the original problem of struggling to breath. Thank you Cigna (who has nothing in writing to substantiate my claim - strange how things get miscommunicated always to the insurance companies benefit) - now out of my life forever and I hope others take note. Get everything in writing from Cigna, and others.
A few months later someone mentioned Musinex and I brought this up with my doctor. He thought it was worth a trial. It was non-prescription and quite expensive, but, thought I would try it anyway.
I have not had a better reaction to a medication. I can do things I have not done in two years. I am breathing better and even if not as good as the 20+K Vest, it is am amazing substitute that I do not intend to do without.
I do caution anyone that needs to take this over an extended period to check drug interactions with other meds with your doctor. Just a safe practice.

5 out of 5 stars I will buy no other!   March 10, 2007

This medicine REALLY works!! The active ingredient is very safe (this was suggested to me by my Dr. when I was pregnant) and it is the ONLY medicine that I use that is effective against deep chest congestion!! Accept no imitations--if you are trying to save a buck and buy a generic of this, I've tried them and they are ineffective. Mucinex is time released while the others aren't.
